One of the most important questions we face as gymnasts is, “How do I stay on the balance beam?”.

Yes, we want to learn new skills and have fun, but at the end of the day we really, really want to STAY….ON…THE….BEAM!

Now, I have learned a thing or two over the years about this four inch wide crazy piece of equipment. I’ve fallen off it more times that I can count. I’ve split, bonked it, scraped it, pounded it, bounced off it; I’ve landed on my head, my hip, my thigh, my ribs, and just about every other body part. I’ve had bruises on my heels, tears on my toes, and scrapes on my face. Of course, I’ve also stuck it, nailed it, conquered it, and triumphed!

Balance beam is tough, and if you think you’re never going to fall or make a mistake…..think again. And remember, that every gymnast you watch on television went through the same process (and continues to go through it).

But there are a few things that I learned over the years that can help you shorten the learning curve a bit. And maybe you won’t have quite as many bumps in the road as I did. In this series, within a series, I’m going to give you some of my top tips to help you stay on the beam, feel confident in your skills, and score higher in competition.

In today’s Gold Medal Tips to Staying on the Beam video, I’m talking all about your BODY PLACEMENT. Where do we need to put our body parts and when in order to maximize our efforts to stay on the beam? This is a critical step. Much of the battle to stay on the beam happens in your head. You have to have the correct thought process with regard to your body placement in order to keep your balance.

    She errored on a front tuck twist that caused her heel to fall free from the beam. In an event that is traditionally settled by the merest of margins, her gold medal was gone.
