Prenatal vitamins (vitamins that you should take during pregnancy) are important; helping you make sure you’re getting the vitamins and minerals you and your baby need to stay healthy.
These prenatal vitamins may come in the form of foods that you eat, including:
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Whole-grain breads and pastas
- Dairy
- Fish that is low in mercury (See our list in the Shannon Miller Lifestyle article – “Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy“.)
But to get all of the prenatal vitamins you and your baby need, you will also likely need include supplements to your diet.
Common supplements during pregnancy are calcium, iron and, of course the prenatal multivitamin. It’s important to stay up with your exams and talk to your personal health care provider to find out which supplements may be right for you.
Folic acid is one of the nutrients included in most prenatal vitamins. According to the March of Dimes, Folic acid helps prevent birth defects of the brain and spinal cord. It may also protect the pregnant woman against cancer and stroke. Pregnant women should get 600 micrograms of Folic acid every day from food and supplements.
Iron is another important nutrient for pregnant women.
- It helps muscles in both mother and baby develop.
- And helps prevent anemia
- Iron can also lower the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight.
Calcium helps keep bones and teeth strong for mom and baby. And it helps the nervous, muscular and circulatory systems stay healthy.
DHA is another supplement that may be advised. DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid. It helps to support the development and function of the baby’s brain and eyes.
Remember, some supplements are dangerous to take during pregnancy.
- Be sure to check with your health care provider before starting on any new prenatal vitamins or supplements during your pregnancy.
