What do you think about some of these diets on the market?

  • Are there any worth their salt?
  • Will they help?
  • Or will the cause the dreaded regain afterward?

Let’s talk diets… even though we ALWAYS recommend a balanced lifestyle with everything in moderation!

Check out the following  SML Diet Reviews.

1. Mediterranean Diet:

  • 2 liters of water per day
  • 3 basic elements: vegetables, cereals, dairy
  • moderate alcohol consumption
  • use olive oil in cooking and sauce
  • fish, lean meat, and eggs for protein sources
  • small amounts of sweets allowed.

SML Take: Thumbs up. Eating a balanced diet of natural, whole foods, and lean protein sources, along with plenty of water, and extras in moderation, equal a diet you can live with for good. This is a way to lose weight the healthy way and keep it off.

2. General low-carb diets:

Examples: Adkins, South Beach, Zone

  • Consume lots of proteins and fats
  • Limit carbohydrate of every kind
  • Drink water
  • Go on a schedule for certain carbohydrates and when they are allowed.

SML Take: Thumbs Down. Proteins and fats are great. Saturated fats and trans fats are not great. And any diet that tells you to cut out fruits and vegetables is not looking out for your best interest. You may lose weight in the short term, but the expense could be: reduced energy, lowered metabolism, and a false sense of thinness. Really, these diets take a lot of fluid out of the body, which looks like fat loss at first. Living without carbohydrates causes the body to crave all kinds of carbohydrates, which sometimes causes the person to overindulge after a certain period of time.

3. Diets based on one superfood:

Examples: Acai Diets, Raspberry Ketone Diets.

Eat what you want, but include a supplement of a certain superfood.

SML Take: Thumbs Down. Never base a nutrition plan on one superfood. No superfood melts fat or reverses other dietary mishaps. If you believe in a superfood, eat it or supplement with it in moderation. The rest of your diet needs to be smart, too.

4. hCG Diet:

Take the pregnancy hormone, hCG, and consume an incredibly low calorie diet.

SML Take: Thumbs Down. Taking hormones that are not necessary for your overall well being is a bad idea. Consuming fewer calories than you need to function in a day is also a really bad idea. Here is a clue: if they ask you to take less than 1200 calories in a day, it’s a bad plan. In fact, the FDA has called the claims by hCG Diet Formulation Companies “fraudulent“, and has banned the sale of hCG for diet purposes.

5. Gluten or Wheat-Free Diets:

Consume regular foods, but make sure they are wheat and gluten free.

SML Take: 1 thumb up. That thumb is for those of you who are on this diet and have a gluten or wheat sensitivity or allergy. This diet is to help people who have gluten or wheat sensitivity or allergy. The Gluten or Wheat-Free Diet is not for weight loss. People with gluten or wheat sensitivities may have inflammation due to the intolerance, which is a certain type of weight gain. It is usually accompanied by diarrhea or fatty stools and stomach cramps after eating a meal or snack high in gluten or wheat. If you are not sure if this applies to you, ask your doctor. Then, going on a gluten and wheat free plan will reduce the inflammation, which will make you feel and appear much slimmer.

6. Body By Vi:

Details: In the Body By Vi plan, you substitute 2 meals for shakes per day, and add Body By Vi snacks through the day. It allows for one regular, balanced meal per day and recommends a balanced exercise regimen. You can just do one shake a day if you’d like to maintain your ideal weight and you’re on-the-go! Plus, you can make money on it if you recruit a few others to join you in your 90 Day Challenge. Not bad.

Shake ingredients:

Selenium Copper Manganese Chromium Molybdenum, FibersolTM, AminogenTM, Soy Protein Isolate, Digestive Resistant Maltodextrin (from FibersolTM),Whey Protein Hydrolysate,Whey Protein Concentrate, DiCalcium Phosphate, Sunflower Oil, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Medium Chain Triglycerides, Maltodextrin, Gum Arabic, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Caseinate, DiMagnesium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Soy Lecithin, Mono and Diglycerides, Patented Protease (from AminogenTM), DiPotassium Phosphate, Sucralose, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin E Acetate, Chromium Amino Acid Chelate, Molybdenum Amino Acid Chelate, Selenium Amino Acid Chelate, Biotin, Vitamin A Palimate, Niacinamide, Potassium Iodide, Zinc Oxide, Copper Gluconate, Calcium Pantothenate, Cyanocobalamin, Manganese Sulfate, Cholecalciferol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Phytomenadione and Folic Acid.

SML take: thumbs up! The shakes offer 23 vitamins and minerals, and allows for many options, snack wise…and it tastes AMAZING! Their slogan is true: “The mix that tastes like a cake mix”.

7. Shakeology:

Details: Shakeology is a plan that replaces one meal or large snack per day with a shake. The rest of the diet is about whole food and balanced nutrition. It is in coordination with fitness super-corporation, Beachbody. In a challenge pack, you choose a Shakeology flavor (including some vegan recipes) and a fitness pack, such as P90X or Turbo Fire, to optimize results.

Ingredients:

Various fruit extracts (acerola, camu-camu, pomegranate, bilberry, blueberry, acai, Goji, Cordyceps, Rose Hips, Maitake, Reishi, Citrus bioflavonoids, Gingko), Whey protein, Chromium, Hydrilla, Apple pectin, Flax seed meal, Chia seed meal, Blue green algae, Spinach powder, oatgrass, wheatgrass, Barley grass, Grape seed extract, cinnamon, natural vanilla flavor, chocolate powder, cocoa powder, xanthum gum, ,guar gum, pea fiber. Also contains an enzyme blend to assist digestion (amylase, papain, cellulose, lactase, lipase, protease, and bromelain)

SML Take: Thumbs Up! Notice the incredible list of whole foods. Most people find it very difficult to get all of those kinds of super foods into a diet plan. Shakeology helps with that. And it allows for the rest of the diet plan to be about balanced nutrition. As an added bonus, the fitness programs are thorough and come with a nutritional booklet and support from Beachbody coaches.

SML TIP: When choosing a diet plan, it really is best to choose something that you can live with forever.

  • Choose a plan that contains good, well-balanced meals and snacks, and allows you some lenience with eating out and fun foods.

  • Moderation is the key; most of us just need a plan to remind us of what “moderation” means.
