The Moderation Nation

Author: Shannon Miller

This morning we spoke to Regina Ragone, registered dietitian and food director for Family Circle magazine, on Shannon Miller Lifestyle radio show. She is helping clear up the confusion on nutrition, diet and how to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Nutrition advice is everywhere – eat 9 to 11 servings of fruits and vegetables; 7 to 9 servings of grains, 6 ounces of protein…and it’s ok to include some discretionary calories.  So, why all the frustration?  Because people don’t understand what it all means for them!

According to the American Dietetic Association, 41% of consumers say they don’t understand the guidelines for diet and nutrition and 52% say they need more practical tips in order to eat right.

Regina discussed a new program and offer that will help all of us establish a healthy and balanced lifestyle – without cutting out our favorite foods. The Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition and the American Dietetic Association are launching Moderation Nation, a program featuring loads of helpful tools, not to mention a national initiative to cover the cost of ADA registered dietitian visits.

HCHN (Hershey Center for Health and Nutrition) is committing $500,000 toward the three-year deal ADA (American Dietetic Association) partnership. This will allow consumers (18 and older) to be reimbursed via mail-in rebate for a visit with an ADA registered dietitian (up to $250) — you can find one near you using ADA’s Find a Registered Dietitian resource.

In addition to the free consultation, The Moderation Nation provides simple, realistic weekly menus, a meal balancing tool that will suggest complementary sides to your main dish and a free iPhone app that will encourage users to take 10-minute breaks throughout the day!
