Legendary Gymnast Shannon Miller Hosts Camp For Local Foster Kids August 2 through 4

JACKSONVILLE, FL, Jul 29, 2011  – The most decorated American gymnast in history, Shannon Miller, and the Florida Department of Children and Families will welcome more than 70 foster children to the first-ever Northeast Region Camp for Champions on Tuesday, August 2 at the University of North Florida. The opening ceremonies for the camp will take place at 1 p.m. at UNF’s University Center, where Shannon Miller and DCF Northeast Region Director Nancy Dreicer will be on hand to kick off the activities.

The children will participate in the Camp for Champions through Thursday, August 4. The camp is for children in foster care ages eight through twelve. Camp events will feature exercise and fitness activities, swimming, sports clinics, motivational speakers, and much more. The camp will help children learn about wellness, leadership, fitness instruction and team building.

The Department of Children and Families “Camps for Champions”, in partnership with carefully selected foundations and other community partners, provides an opportunity for hundreds of children and young adults from Florida’s foster care system to participate in a summer camp experience that might otherwise not have been possible.
