Mompreneur profile: Romy Taormina, Psi Bands creator
Author: Shannon Miller Lifestyle
Meet Romy Taormina, a mompreneur who found a better, drug free solution for nausea relief; Psi Bands.
Romy became dissatisfied with existing products for relief from nausea after suffering through months of debilitating nausea during her two pregnancies.
She always knew she wanted to run her own business. Taormina hatched the concept of Psi Bands (pronounced “Sigh Bands”), drug-free, stylish and comfortable wrist bands that relieve nausea through application of accupressure at the wrist.
Romy is fulfilled to know that Psi Bands are making a positive and measurable difference in the lives of those who suffer from nausea due to morning sickness during pregnancy, motion sickness when traveling, or that results from chemotherapy or anesthesia.
Shannon Miller Lifestyle: How and when did you form your company?
Romy Taormina: Psi Health Solutions, Inc. incorporated in 2006 and launched in 2007.
SML: What makes your products or services different than anyone else’s?
RT: Psi Bands are uniquely stylish, waterproof, and adjustable.
SML: What was the biggest challenge or setback you had when forming it whether it be time-wise, financially, or emotionally?
RT: Time was a challenge. I was a stay-at-home mom of two young boys while launching the business. I looked for ways to streamline activities (like meal planning on Sundays for the entire week which translated into healthier meals, less trips to the grocery store, and less stress because I wasn’t scrambling); limiting outside activities to the ones that I felt were truly important (i.e. I did not need to commit to attending every class party or field trip); and ensuring I kept up with my exercise in order to maintain my health (if mom gets sick, no one benefits and that is time wasted).
SML: What’s the one piece of advice you wished you had when you got the idea to start your own business?
RT: I don’t think there is one piece of advice that would have steered (or deterred) me from starting my own business. It’s one day at a time; sometimes one step at a time. You just have to keep walking forward and know that you will overcome whatever obstacle you face. There will be both good and bad days. Savor the journey.
SML: What has been your best memory or happiest moment since you started your business venture?
RT: When Psi Bands first launched on store shelves – to take an idea and turn it into a reality is so gratifying. But it’s the everyday testimonials that keep me charged. It’s so fulfilling to know that Psi Bands are making a positive and measurable difference in the lives of those who suffer from nausea.
SML: Fun Question- If you could go back in time to meet any other famous mom (Mompreneur or not!) in history who would it be and why?
RT: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. She was so poised, eloquent, and had her share of challenges. I would welcome hearing from her how she managed those challenges and if she felt she would have changed anything, what that would have been and why.
SML: Is there anything else you’d like to share about your company or to mom’s that have a great idea and don’t know where to start?
RT: Surround yourself with other successful women entrepreneurs. Their creative ideas, wisdom, support, and energy are contagious. A couple of resources: Savor the Success and Spark & Hustle Conferences.
